Memories to Heirlooms |
My father was an amazing man and strongest man I have ever known. He demanded in excellence from himself and wanted it for us - “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.” His strength also came from his kindness and moral compass. We lost Dad to cancer when he was only 63. At the time, I did not realize how young that was but it was far too young. Even 25 years later his words still guide me.
When he wrote, he printed with all capital block letters, but his signature was a beautiful script with large loops on the J and G. Your signature is a statement about you and his just fit him. When I developed my own signature, I borrowed Dad's J but preferred my grandfather's G (a large lowercase G with a big loop). As you may know, teachers sign their initials umpteen times a day for student passes (or at least we did). My J and G loops often overflowed the space but I didn't care, because I was carrying on a tradition. When two of my nieces were young, too young to truly know him, I made each a quilt, followed by one for me, that featured one of Dad's favorite quotes, "leave the world better than you found it," with an embroidered copy of his signature. A quilt is a way to wrap someone in love. Combining his words and signature in a quilt was one way I could pass along his love and his essence while keeping it with me. Do you have someone who's story you would like to tell? Contact me at and let's see what "signature" project we can design!
