Memories to Heirlooms

Pressing Matters

An iron on a press cloth.
"Ironing and sewing go together like peas and carrots!" At least that is what Forest Gump would have said if he had ever met Coco Chanel.  Hee, hee.  I like anything that makes the task easier or gives a better result.  Here are my top 3!

1. A Good Iron

Three irons
I like an iron with weight and one that gets hot and steamy.  I have been a Rowena snob for years but Mom and I have been using her Black and Decker with good results.  Lately, my Panasonic has been my chosen because it is:
  • cordless
  • points on both ends
  • reheats quickly
  • not too heavy
Note - it is worth the investment of using distilled water in your iron and emptying it after each use.  This keeps minerals and rust from developing in your iron.

2. Wool Ironing Mat

A white press cloth with a corner missing.
Wool catches threads and lint but that does not impact its effectiveness.
Who knew a thick piece of wool felt could make such a difference.
  • It reflects heat back, effectively ironing both sides at once and presses any thing faster and better
  • It has give, when you iron beading or embroidery face down, it does not get smashed.
  • The fibers of the wool hold small pieces in place, making them easier to iron.
Note- I have seen very thick mats for sale.  I have not tried one. Mine is so thin I mistook it for a piece of felt and cut a hunk our to make bearloom eyes! It works great for me and makes me think that a good piece of 100% wool felt would do the same and be more cost effective.

3.  Best Press

A bottle of Mary Elle's Best Press.
A square piece of flannel that has been sprayed with Best Press
A nicely pressed piece of flannel
This stuff is great.  It is easy to use and made well-worn flannel shirt fabric look crisp and new with little effort. I wrote to the company to find out its ingredients and what makes it "Earth and People Friendly".  After 3 emails and 2 phone calls they have yet to respond.  Makes me go hum, but I do get great results with it.
The right tools can really help you "pump iron" efficiently with great results.  PRESS ON!
